[Australia] Recruitment insights report for March 2024

The Recruitment Experiences and Outlook Survey (REOS) Recruitment Insights Report for March 2024 was released on April 16, Jobs and Skills Australia reports.

Headline figures from the data indicate an easing labour market; the number of employers recruiting (49 per cent) remained unchanged over the month. 

The recruitment rate, was reportedly slightly down, in smoothed terms, over the month, after remaining generally steady for the previous six months. 

In addition, Australian employers are finding it easier to hire staff. The recruitment difficulty rate eased 4 percentage points over the month to 50 per cent. The decline marks the lowest difficulty rate since March 2021.

The proportion of employers expecting to increase staff over the next three months dropped 4 percentage points over the month to 22 per cent. Setting aside normal month-to-month survey volatility, hiring intentions have been fairly static for the last year. 

In capital cities, there was a decrease in recruitment activity over the month, dropping 1 percentage point to 46 per cent. 

However, the recruitment rate in rest-of-state areas (covering regional Australia) increased by 1 percentage point to 53 per cent, well above the rate in capital cities. Recruitment difficulty within capital cities reportedly continues to ease, dropping 6 percentage points over the month to 46 per cent, its lowest level since May 2021. by contrast, rest-of-state areas saw recruitment difficulty slightly rise, going up by 1 percentage point to 58 per cent.

The proportion of employers recruiting only to fill new positions declined by 3 percentage points to 27 per cent in March 2024; declining for the third consecutive months. But employers recruiting only to replace staff recorded a significant increase of 6 percentage points to 62 per cent.

The proportion of employers unable to fill their vacancies within a month also fell, dropping by 5 percentage points to 49 per cent in March 2024.
